Roxy went into care at the age of 15 due to growing up in an abusive household. Roxy was placed in a foster placement and although this was a safe environment, she found the family set up very triggering. Roxy has had 5 social workers in the last 2 years, has felt she isn’t a priority and that her needs have not always been met.
Roxy came to BfYP wanting more freedom but to also be supported to achieve her potential. Roxy said BfYP was the right choice for her as it is semi-independent, but also very supportive. Roxy says “with the support from BfYP I was able to take back control of my life. I was supported in getting my passport and my National Insurance number. BfYP have been great in advocating how I feel and my struggles at school, which has led me to apply for university which they have been supportive of”.
Roxy says she has been supported by Amy (her BfYP Key Worker) in every way: social needs, emotional needs, health needs etc. Roxy continues “I completed my university application on my own, but Amy supported me by reading through my personal statement, doing a supporting letter and visiting universities with me; Amy and I visited 3 universities with different courses. Amy supported me with my research into each university and different courses and advocated on my behalf to ensure my rights and entitlements were met as a young care leaver so that I would have the best opportunities. Amy has liaised with the student services at my chosen universities to ensure these opportunities continue to follow me through my time at university and has also liaised with social services around this”.
“Amy literally did everything when it came to my getting a passport. I had been trying with my foster carer and social worker for almost a year to get my passport. Amy and I had endless phone calls with HMPO and an embassy to collect the right documentation to gather this. After 5 months of endless communication, I finally received my passport which felt amazing and gave me the biggest sigh of relief.”.
“Amy has been the best support worker and I am so glad I was placed with BfYP. I am so glad I have had Amy as my keyworker, I don’t think I would enjoy life as much without her”.
Roxy left BfYP in September to go to University in London. Amy and the whole team moved her to London are we are so proud of Roxy. We have since visited Roxy in London, and she is well and happy.
